Since anytime the Charente has beeb used for the transport of men and goods. The “Gabares” flat bottomed, laden with cereals, stone, “eau de vie”, wood, metal and paper slided with the current to the ocean. From the atlantic parts this merchandise was exported to countries of the North. On the journey back, with their holds full of salt, fish, coal, the boats were towed by oxes or horses, who progressed at a slow place along the townpath. With the arrival of the railway the “ gabariers” gradually ceased their activity. But all along its course, the river Charente retains the history of those who lived here.
